  • Bukowski Post Illustrating What's Wrong With the Internet

Read: So You Want to Be a Writer? by Charles Bukowski
    Commenters, he’s talking to you.

And it’s a POEM, not a university lecture.  Sometimes poetry tells the truth with lies.  Sometimes the truth in poetry is simply an expression of a feeling.

    Extended thought on the subject.

  • This is Alan Watts.  Increasingly I’m realizing he’s been a hero of mine since I was a kid when I discovered his books in my parents’ bookshelves.  He has a knack for illustrating philosophical ideas (often Zen & Taoist ones) in simple down-to-earth language.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone created a nice little animation to Alan Watts speaking critically about modern life and the educational/professional system in comparison to music.  It’s short, amusing and profound; good stuff: http://www.neticons.net/music_life/

  • JK Rowling Commencement Speech at Harvard, June 8, 2008 - Part 1

A truly great speech; inspirational, heartbreaking and uplifting, and funny too. I only embeded Part 1 here but it’s well worth viewing the rest:

  • CSS (the band) “Alala”

Video: meh, ok.  Music: great, possibly genius.  Best lyric: “I bought the posh clothing but I still look ugly.”

I feel like I shouldn’t like this band because it’s too hip, too young and trendy, too much like a margarita in a box. But I like it. A lot.

  • World of Oceans
I love how this shows the land as negative space.  I’m all for aquacentrism.

  • Foreground - The Filibuster: Rye, Maple Syrup, egg white, angostura bitters, lemon.
Background - Carter Beats the Devil

“The novel “Carter Beats the Devil,” by Glen David Gold, is the inspiration for a cocktail from Flora restaurant’s mixologist Erik Adkins. Gold’s fictionalized biography is about Oakland native Charles Joseph Carter, an early 20th century American illusionist. It’s no coincidence that the restaurant’s single piece of artwork is a huge reproduction of the novel’s cover. Adkins’ creation features El Tesoro Reposado Tequila, lime juice, organic agave nectar, smoky Del Maguey Minero mezcal and a house-made tincture of Thai bird’s eye chile, giving a subtle spicy note that blossoms into a warm glow on the finish. It’s not for everyone, but borderline chileheads will take to it - well, like the devil to Carter.” - Lynne Char Bennett, SF Chronicle

  • Happiness Reminder

“Happiness is being the creator of your experience, choosing to take pleasure in what you have, right now, regardless of the circumstances, while being the best you that you can be.” ~Alex Shalman

Nice article, simple answers to the big question.

  • eMusic.com

Though it doesn’t always have what I’m looking for, I still think emusic is the best music DL site for discovering great stuff I wasn’t looking for.

Just downloaded some very interesting Scandinavian jazz by Mats Eilertsen.

  • I'm going to Prison

Likewise, when playing Animal Crossing, you can create a second village to travel to on the train. It’s great fun to name this village “Prison”.

Friendly passenger: “So, you’re going to Prison, eh? I thought so.”

    Train conductor: “Next Stop, Prison.”

Naming yourself “LOL” on Zelda64 yields the best results; “I am the Great Deku Tree, LOL.”
